HISTORY
The revival of interest in early American cultures has largely been responsible for the renewed popularity of hand-loom weaving in recent years. Today, as ever before, it is possible to weave
beautiful yarn or cloth designs with little or no beginning skills, much like our ancestors did so long ago.
Within this body of weaving history, the peg loom has an interesting history and was a challenge to research and develop. According to extant manuscripts, in 13th century Scotland, there was recorded a primitive peg loom, very similar to today's peg loom. It featured a construction remarkably similar to
our own Peg Loom, with its hardwood cross-bar and dowel construction and joinery and the use of 'little timbers' (dowel pegs) to hold the warp. The Vikings were also known to have used a peg loom extensively.
In early America, the peg loom tradition continued. These primitive looms featured 'little whittles' or hand-carved twig pegs that were glued in place in hand-drilled holes.
WEAVING ON THE PEG LOOM
There is an endless variety of materials that can be used for peg loom
weaving--yarn, raffia, beads, yarn to mention a few. Thick yarn produces
the fastest results. However, you can weave with any thickness of yarn.
Here is an illustration of weaving with raffia, a natural material.
The Homestead Peg Loom can be
used to create a variety of weaving
patterns and designs. Here is an
example of an interesting African-
weaving pattern. Notice the
triangular pattern and multiple colors
that were used.
Many projects can be completed on the Homestead Peg Loom, from
the simple to the complex. Pictured here is an example of a primitive
early American flag that can be woven on the peg loom. This flag
was actually two weavings that were sewn together. The stars were
later appliqued.
Try projects of your own design! Your imagination is the only limit!
