Homestead Folk Toys offers selected historical folk toys for outdoor use. In a quaint little book called "The Pretty Little Pocket Book," first published in America during the Revolutionary war times, the author listed serveral outdoor children's games played at the time.

Among the names given were:

Fivestones; Hopscotch; Clay Marbles; Hornbook, Battledore and Shuttlecock and many more.

The names were rhymed and a moral lesson was given to each toy or activity.

GRACES--

The game of Graces dates back to the 1830's. This two player game features two wooden, ribboned hoops and four catching wands to fling the Graces' hoops back and forth. Graces was often referred to as a girl's game as it was meant to encourage 'gracefulness',' hence its name.

Traditional set of clay marbles, hand-rolled as they were in the days of colonial America. Pouch and marble games included. #104

HOPSCOTCH --

This historical game is Often referred to as 'Scotch-Hopping'. Our standard Hopscotch set includes jumbo sidewalk chalk, stone 'pucks' , playing instructions and rules for several historical Hopscotch games.

One game book of the time stated , in fun, that:
"Close and near, Here and There, We play at Hopscoth Most anywhere..."

MARBLE SHOOTER--

The standard classic has returned! In the Victorian times, when the game of Marbles was to be enjoyed indoors, the wooden Marble Shooter was developed. The ' pull and shoot' action of the toy enabled a more accurate method of targeting selected marbles.

HORNBOOK, BATTLEDORE & SHUTTLECOCK--

We are the sole maker of this historical American outdoor game. Hornbook, Battledore and Shuttlecock is similar to lawn tennis and was quite popular in colonial and Victorian times. Our set includes two wooden paddles, one cork and feather shuttlecock and batting rhymes and games.
